What Is Root Canal Treatment
Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic treatment, is a dental procedure used to save a tooth that has been severely damaged or infected. The treatment involves removing the inflamed or infected pulp (the soft tissue inside the tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels), cleaning and shaping the root canals, and filling and sealing them with a material like gutta-percha.The procedure:The dentist will first administer local anesthesia to numb the area. A rubber dam may be used to isolate the tooth and keep it dry and clean. The dentist will access the pulp chamber by removing a small portion of the tooth. The inflamed or infected pulp is removed. The root canals are cleaned and shaped using small instruments. The root canals are filled and sealed with a material like gutta-percha. A temporary filling or a crown may be placed to protect the tooth. Benefits:Saves the natural tooth. Relieves pain caused by infection or inflammation. Restores the tooth's function. May improve the appearance of the tooth if a crown is placed.
