What Is Implant Treatment
Dental implant treatment involves replacing a missing tooth with a titanium post or screw surgically inserted into the jawbone. This post acts as a tooth root, supporting an artificial tooth (crown) that's designed to match your natural teeth in appearance and function. The entire process can take several months as the implant integrates (fuses) with the jawbone, a process called osseointegration. Here's a more detailed look:1. Initial Assessment and Planning:Your dentist or periodontist will assess your oral health, including bone density and gum health, to determine if you're a suitable candidate for implants. They'll likely take X-rays or other imaging to plan the implant placement and ensure the bone structure can support the implant. 2. Implant Placement:A surgeon will make a small incision in the gum to expose the jawbone. They'll drill a space in the bone and insert the titanium implant (post). The gums are then stitched back into place, and a healing cap may be placed over the implant. 3. Osseointegration (Healing):The implant will gradually fuse with the jawbone, a process that takes several months, typically 3 to 6. During this time, you'll wear a temporary denture for aesthetic purposes. Regular follow-up appointments will monitor the healing process. 4. Abutment Placement:Once the implant has healed and integrated with the bone, the abutment (a small connector) is attached to the implant. The abutment extends through the gum and serves as a base for the artificial tooth. 5. Crown Placement:Your dentist will take impressions of the abutment to create a custom-made crown. The crown is then placed on the abutment, restoring your missing tooth and smile.
